A Church with a Heart for our Community

November 13th Thursday

Greetings in the name of the One…who was, who is, and who is to come, Jesus Christ – THE Crucified and Risen Saviour! What a chilly November morning as we are reminded that the “times they are a-changing!” and followers of the Christian faith are getting prepared for another Advent season. With the world swirling in such turbulent times it is  our belief in the Advent – the revealing of the Messiah, that gives us hope and we live the ‘adventure’ of our faith. Today I will be praying for you, asking Father to challenge you to grow, to accept new ideas, to respond to life with hope, and to express love to those who desperately need it.

Yesterday was an exciting day – I downloaded a new Christmas album! I have already read three books in preparation for the Advent journey that will take us to Bethlehem as we remember the Incarnation of God’s son. In the midst of all that I came across an article that intrigued me called: The 10 Building Blocks of Biblical Community by Rick Warren. I usually avoid 10 steps – 5 things – 3 points … formula teaching but I was curious…and this was part 1 and only had 5 Building Blocks, so I scanned it and there were some good points. The five building blocks presented: 1] frequency – Hebrews 10:25 , 2] authenticity – James 5:15 , 3] mutuality – Romans 1:12 and this was addressed in terms of “mutual accountability – mutual encouragement – mutual honoring” , 4] courtesy , 5] sympathy – Colossians 3:12.

All the points were good…but I found the ‘building block’ of mutuality very revealing. There are four staccato-like sentences that I have been pondering. I know that we all say them in one form or another but in the individualistic and independent atmosphere of our world, even in the church, I am not sure we really mean them…or even know what they mean. I am going to give them to you and don’t make any quick response…let them settle in you soul…Fellowship is based on mutuality. In fellowship that means that we help each other grow. Together we’re stronger. You cannot be what God wants you to be without other people. Now consider this verse: “I mean that I want us to help each other with the faith we have. Your faith will help me and my faith will help you.”  Romans 1:12 NCV.

Now, all I must do is ‘chew on these’ until the next 5 Building Blocks come my way and then there may be something else to share with you. However, if you will look up the scripture references and read them thoughtfully – I think God will reveal insight to you!

Be blessed!
