A Church with a Heart for our Community

October 16th Friday

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ – THE Risen Saviour! I trust that you are enjoying this beautiful Friday …and that you have had a grand “Thanksgiving” week. Are you excited about the weekend and all the adventures that await? Are you looking forward to gathering with your church family to celebrate your faith, to encourage and be encouraged, to pray and praise, and to find the strength that comes from being together in God’s presence? I will be praying for you today, asking Father to release an understanding of how much He loves you and where He wants to lead you!

He was called – a man after God’s who would do what God wanted (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22). Sounds impressive and yet he was so ordinary…a shepherd who was quite happy camping on the hillside so the sheep must have liked him. He became quite good with a slingshot. It seems he could play a harp and wrote a song or two. He really enjoyed his own company and was the ‘runt of the litter’ so to speak. But, he was ordinary. Just a young man who God saw as someone with the potential to be faithful.

So God sought him out…you know the story. Even his own father thought he was ordinary. I wonder what Dad thought when the prophet Samuel stood David before his family and anointed with oil to be the next king-leader of Israel. Imagine, if you will, that moment as described in Scripture: So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him (David) in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon (rushed upon  ESV) David in power. Then the moment passed, the prophet moved on, the brothers went on their way, Dad was scratching his head, and David went back to the sheep…to his ‘ordinary life’.

Of course, we know what God did with David’s ordinary life of faithfulness. He didn’t do any miracles. He certainly wasn’t perfect. But he was willing to do what God wanted. He admitted his mistakes and sins. He took responsibility for his own life. He asked for forgiveness. He kept on praying and praising and worshipping. He was an ordinary man who put himself into the hands of an extraordinary God…and the rest will be told by God.

Let me encourage you to enjoy being who you are. You don’t have to be a superstar. You simply follow Jesus in quiet obedience, keep your eyes on Jesus, seek forgiveness when necessary, use the gifts and abilities you have been given, serve your family, let God use you…an ordinary person after the heart of an extraordinary God.

Have a blessed weekend!
