Greetings to you in the name of the One who is known as the ‘Architect of Creation’, Jesus Christ – THE Risen Saviour. The weather outside today seems to be telling us that there are changes blowing in the wind as we transition from late summer to early autumn. However, this too is the day that the Lord has made…have you taken time to say “thank you” for another day to be alive? Today I will be praying for you, asking Father to reveal the beauty of creation to you in a brand new perspective.

I have been reading parts of an interview with a Christian musician and hymn-writer, Keith Getty. He is responding to questions about Christian music in the 21st century and the resurgence of hymns which is leading to more emphasis on congregational singing. He makes the point that some 20% of the Bible is written in song so a healthy Christian is one who sings. There is a discussion about singing songs in church that are popular for about three years…shallow songs is how they are defined, as compared to those songs that are deeper, more meaningful and carry you through life. We need to learn more about singing the Word of God.

Keith talks about defining what a “hymn” is…it is not a scientific name, but simply a style of song. It is harder to write a hymn because you are not trying to impress the modern generation with a simple song about Jesus but trying to grasp the vastness of God as revealed in Scripture. A hymn therefore is something complex and deep and rich. He makes an interesting point when he says that an average young Christian today knows less about the Old Testament than an unbeliever in the 1950’s.

This interview was made even more relevant after hearing a bit of kibitzing that took place at the Gaither Vocal Band concert. The folk were teasing Bill Gaither about his age (82) and related a comment a young man made when introduced to him – “You are really old! We have hymnals in our church that have your songs published in them!” As funny as they may have sounded…it is true! I am thanking God today for hymn-song writers who have crafted the words and melodies and thoughts that have lasted through the generations and carried us through life. I am reminded of a great theologian who was asked by a young man – :what is the greatest truth about God that you know? His response was beautiful…”Jesus loves this I know-for the Bible tells me so”.

Just a little something to ponder on a Thursday…be blessed!
